Indoor Water Park: Ocean Dome Have fun at the Ocean Dome, which is one of the largest indoor water parks in the world. It’s located in Miyazaki, Kyushu Island.
Above all else, the size is impressive. In fact, Ocean Dome is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest indoor water park, measuring 300 meters in length, 100 meters in width. And the temperature is 30 degrees Celsius year-round.
When you walk in, you are greeted by a beach of pure white sand and a paradise of eternal Summer.
You can watch the surfers on the artificial waves of The Great Bank or try body-boarding yourself.
There are quite a few differences between the Ocean Dome and the ocean, among them the heated indoor pool, the kids’ pool, the floating pool, and the three fast and thrilling water slides. Everyone feels like a child when playing in the water.
Within the dome, there are shops where you can rent the latest in swimsuit fashions or whet your appetite with drinks, fast food, light snacks, or full-scale restaurants that serve up the best in local Miyazaki cuisine.
Why not forget your schedules, your time tables, and your worries and just spend a day playing in the water.

I understand completely why they would want to do that. People sometimes don’t think of the FACT that it snows over there and gets cold at some point of the year. Why do people have indoor pools? Because they want to swim. People really have to start thinking about the logic of why they would do this, and why the -roof closes-

They do have and indoor golf course allready. Im in Minnesota, and I would buy a season pass. Allthough the waterpark by the ocean seems a little odd. But you have to give the japs some credit. they do make SONY…..
I would rather swim the sharks, seaweed, adn anything else you can think of than having to deal with little kids terds (feces) floating around all over the place with no place to go. This ranks up there with indoor ski resort in Dubai… Buy a plane a ticket and enjoy the real thing, it’s much better. These places are for people that would rather enjoy a nice night alone yanking their crank.. Same principal feels almost the same but just not quite good enough…
million of people paid $50 or so to go to a water parks, which I think much less impress. I think people who do not like this are just jealous that they do not have such a facility in their own country.

Archologies are the way of the future, this is just a small step in development, its a brilliant design, though the placement is poor ill agree.. this a beautiful project, and i would love to see more in other parts of the world.
I went there last year guys and these pictures are way nicer than the actual facility is. It’s run down, rusty, and smells horrible. When the wave pool starts, they don’t even let you out into the water. They make you LEAVE and can only watch the lifeguards have fun. For one hour during the day you can spend another $30 to body board for a little bit but that’s it.
Major bummer. I’m sure when it first opened it was cool but it doesn’t hold up at all.
I think it’s a really nice idea, for many reasons, let’s say someone can’t be under the sun for too long (disease), or maybe it’s cold outside to be in a beach, or maybe you would prefere to be in such place instead of outside, sience it’s such a big beach, you could get lost or swept or maybe you’re afraid of the waves, that place is very good for you…
And as for the other comments saying the japanese are stupid and they should deserve to be nuked, I think you’re afraid of changes or other country succeed more then yours, if you would have thought first instead of just saying stupid things, we would make this site a better place…

This is an excellent Concept, especially if You can make large surfable waves. As anyone who surfs knows, Good surf does not come every day, and when the good surf comes, the Breaks get crowded, and you may have to wait a long time in between sets…You also have to deal with bad weather, hostile locals, wetsuits in winter,and a host of other variables. I live in California, and the ocean is getting more poluted every day…Places like Malibu, San Onofre, County Line, Topanga Canyon, And Leo Carrillo are all Nasty. I would welcome a place that was clean with good consistent Waves. If The waves are good, the problem will be crowd controll. If you Build it and the waves are good…The surfers will come…The only problem I see is keeping it clean, and dealing with rowdy kids…Palm Springs, Las Vegas…Great Locations..

If I were to build an indoor beach, it would definitely not be placed so near to the actual sea. Unlike this dome! Anyway I believe it to be a great profitable concept turned into reality.

For your information: it IS a safe environment for the young ones. Also, there are quite a few typhoons -hurricanes for you that don’t know- in Japan during the summer months; and also, a very long monsoon -heavy rain, day & nite, season during the summer. Thus, the idea to build such a place.
The main problem is that it is so far from the heavily populated areas to be cost effective. But the realestate prices prohibited the building of this pleasure palace from being built in or near larger cities. Consider that one square yard -approximately- sells for an average price of $1,200.00 American.

Have any of you heard of the Gaylord Resort in Texas? That place is awesome. Go Google it or something, it’s really neat. More practical than this, I think, because having an air-conditioned river walk in 100+ Texas is smarter than a fake ocean a mile away from a real ocean.

For some reason the US economy is doing great. Greater than the doubters and naysayers want to concede, and better than most. The US has money to spend on their military and rightly so. That is what has created the stability in society for technology to be created.
After WWII one major reason that Japan has done well with her economy is because of the US military and money spent on it.

I agree with loads of people here who think that this is a really dumb idea. Look how close it is to a real beach and how blue the sky is in all the pictures. Now look at the phoney sky and scenery inside this monstrosity and tell me how anyone could think this was a sensible use of all that material. Typical arrogance of man to cut down a huge area of natural beauty and replace it with a pale imitation. There really is so little hope for our species. I despair.
And by the way, my negativity isn’t motivated by wishing to knock any nationality or race, and I’m not anti-technology. I work in an technological industry.
It’s purely the stupidity of the enterprise, and I don’t care how many sad people they persuade to go there or whether it is commercially sound. Do you really think that everything that dumb humans are prepared to spend money on and therefore makes commercial sense to some sharp operator is necessarily a good idea? More fool you if you do. That’s taking steps towards the precipice with a blindfold on.

Seems like an interesting experiment in human scale god working - all power to them - regardless of motives. It’s good to see people trying to build a better world for themselves. Mistakes just mean we’ll do better next time.

You have to give the Japanese credit, like them or not. They are using stuff in Japan that most Countries won’t even know about for years. What is more amazing to me about OCEAN DOME is that it is already 14 years old. Think about that. In 1993 when it opened, the very small amount of people in the USA that had them were using cell phones as big as a horses leg, was there the internet then? I can’t remember. Gas was about$1.00 per gallon. But in Japan, they aleady had OCEAN DOME.

Actually, Omar…this dome is a big white elephant that loses over a million USD per year…The pictures are old…It is now run down, open only half the year and is a complete and utter disaster both financially and operationally…I was there 2 weeks ago..and will never go back..The Golf is great..the hotel and everything else sucks…It was a stupid idea then and it is now…it should be torn down and erased from the skyline of Miyazaki….Starwood now only Franchise the hotel and the management is poor…Ripplewood spent a ton of cash to upgrade the facility and add an Onsen, but the staff there have no idea how to manage it..It could be a great resort, but they need to fire the management in the Hotel and bring in some foreign help quickly…As a reort they lost just over USD 10 million last year…Its pitiful!!!

Yeah, I’m not here to bash racist people but there’s seems to be a lot of miseducation about Japan. I have lived in Harima-cho, Japan for 5 months now, giving me a little bit of credibility. In addition, I am from America. So first, who cares whether the Ocean Dome is a good idea or not. It’s a silly idea that turned out alright, among thousands of other silly ideas that turned out bad. Secondly, the whole “nuke” Japan thing is ridiculous. If only you understood any miniscule thing about Japan, you wouldn’t dare say something like that. The only reason people are racist to begin with, is because they are uneducated, miseducated, or grow up without experiencing the world outside of their little box. So here’s a few facts- Japanese women travel more than any other group in the world. The Japanese are a homogenous nation, yes, but so is almost every other damn country in the world. America is not, granted, but as you can see, it can amount to crap. Japan has virtually no violence and is respectful to each other. Can we find that in America? Maybe not. Please educate yourselves.

the individuals who r upset seem to 4get that japan is one of the most eco-friendly countrys on the planet. todays oceans r very polluted and dangerous also japan is one of the most earthquake prone country’s in the world, = tsunami. here you dont have to deal w/ that i know the ocean is a 15 min drive from the ocean dome but it does eliminate alot of the danger. another plus is the synthetic sand that is used dont u hate when u go to the beach and all that sand gets stuck in places we would rather not mention w/ this syntec sand simply shake off problem solved. there is also a rock climbing station, & resturants. what more could u ask 4.
It sounds like a number of people are jealous of their water park. The USA has a number of INDOOR water parks (example Castaway bay on Lake Erie) but none are as grand as the Ocean Dome. If you want nature go hike to some remote beach if you have a bunch of kids and want safety and fun go to Ocean Dome.
I just got back from a weekend trip to the Ocean Dome and a stay at SeaGaia Resort. The Ocean Dome was impressive and lots of fun. My 2 year old son had a blast playing in the kid zones and we all had fun at the “beach.” I had read the reviews from previous visitors before I went and was worried the establishment would be rundown. I was pleasantly surprised to find the opposite. The Ocean Dome looked great and was well maintained. The staff were friendly and even spoke a little English. The price is not $50, but closer to $30 during peak times (a season pass is only 8,000 Yen). In addition, if you stay at the hotel, you get a discounted admission to the Ocean Dome. The hotel was great and had a breathtaking view. We had a wonderful weekend and plan to go back. I would suggest a trip to the Ocean Dome if you ever in the area.
Dudes, I moved to MN from CA. Bring it here. I would so get a season pass.. (a season pass would be all year round..whoot). And yes its cold in Japan, it snows like heck and rains like hoot. Beaches are hard to come by in MN. Man, a indoor beach at the mall of america… that is awesome.

This is a beautiful idea, for a while I have been working on a project proposal for such beach to be build in my city johannesburg but I have not been able to talk to anyone who can give me some ideas. Rrom what i hear and see from pictures, this place produces some of the best quality surfable waves(from an indoor pool) in the world. The technology in that area is so far ahead of everyone else, it’ll be years to reproduce that wave making technology. Now i hear the place is shutting down, is that true?
